Aquifers are a major source of water supply and their management constitutes one the most fundamental societal issues for the coming decades. Numerical models are the only tools that allow forecasting the behavior of complex hydrological systems. In the last 50 years, such models have played an important role in the characterization of geological heterogeneity influencing groundwater flow and transport processes.
One of Dr Mariethoz's contributions has been to develop numerical methods that offer improved possibilities to integrate different kinds of data, especially soft knowledge such as geological concepts, expressed using the semi-qualitative concept of a training image. He designed algorithms able to perform reconstructions and stochastic simulations, and also to address multiple non-linearly dependant variables. Parallel computing for the Earth Sciences is also a topic of major interest.
